Plum blossoms and magpies bring joyful news to welcome spring

“Plum blossoms” and “magpies” are classic themes commonly found in jade carving, imbued with auspicious blessings.

The plum blossom, one of the “Three Friends of Winter,” stands proud against snow and frost. Its strong branches and elegant blossoms symbolize purity and steadfastness. The name of the magpie itself is filled with joy. The “Qianyuan Tianbao Yishi” records that “people of that time considered the sound of magpies a sign of good fortune,” giving rise to the saying that “a magpie brings good news.” Combining plum blossoms and magpies captures the auspicious omen of “joy on the brow,” offering both the beauty of a natural landscape and the auspicious, delightful cultural significance of the two.

Qing dynasty court jade, especially during the Qianlong reign, featured many ornaments and decorative pieces with plum blossom and magpie themes, used to celebrate birthdays and joyous occasions while adding a touch of cultural elegance to any setting. Even today, plum blossoms and magpies remain popular auspicious motifs.

In terms of artistic expression, carvers often use round or bas-relief techniques to depict the strength of the plum branches and the beauty of the blossoms and their delicate shadows. The posture and spirit of the magpie are also rendered lively and lifelike. Furthermore, the natural and rich variations in jadeite color infuse each piece with a different mood and atmosphere: the vibrant vitality and nobility of green jadeite, the auspiciousness and liveliness of red jadeite, and the elegant simplicity and rustic charm of yellow jadeite, each showcasing its own unique style and appeal.
